The Very Hungry Caterpillar … DIY style

My kids are a bit old for this story so we made up a new version from the fruit and veg we had in the right quantities.

My 7 yr old wrote the numbers, names of the fruit and veg and days of the week (this was fun and free of the drama that comes with school spelling homework).

I read the real book and paused for the kids to fill in our version of fruit and veg. One child was holding the toy caterpillar and making eating noises (if you don’t have one, use a green sock, etc). When we came to Saturday we opened the fridge door went on a feeding frenzy – our caterpillar ate eggs, a slice of cheese, a tub of butter, a jar of jam, a bowl of soup, blueberries, yogurt, onions, 2L of milk and one slice of watermelon.

We ate a nice green leaf (lettuce) and then made a cocoon from a tea towel and then emerged a butterfly (two hands, shadow puppet style).

Think of some of the favourite stories your kids are growing out of and have fun trying to revamp them. Send them through to us or post them on our Facebook page – we love to see fun with books!
